Features & Benefits

Rendering Engines

The power of API2PDF is that it is a REST API layer built on top of open source technologies, removing the complexity of interacting with the underlying engines directly. The API layer is built by US Developers based out of Austin, Texas, USA.

The underlying engines are all open source with licenses that allow for commercial use and distribution, but you should make sure that your organization is allowed to use the open source technologies.

Google Chrome

Best for the highest fidelity and rendering from HTML to PDF or URL to PDF and HTML to Image and URL to Image. The results are higher quality than the wkhtmltopdf engine and allows for Puppeteer WaitFor commands and options.

wkhtmltopdf

Older rendering engine for HTML to PDF and URL to PDF, often replaced by Google Chrome. However, this engine does offer automatic Table of Contents generation while Google Chrome does not.

LibreOffice

Most typically used for converting Word, Images, and PowerPoint files to PDF format. Any file that can be reasonably opened by LibreOffice can be converted to PDF using the /any-to-pdf endpoint. LibreOffice container also offers endpoints for converting HTML to MS Word file and HTML to MS Excel file. And lastly, there is a Thumbnail endpoint which provides the capability to take the first page of any PDF or Office file and generate an image. This is great if you want to generate image previews of files to your end users.

PdfSharp

This library is used for merging PDF files together, as well as adding bookmarks to PDFs or setting a password on a PDF file. You can also extract pages out of a PDF and compress PDFs.

Additional Features

The container also comes with barcode / QR code generation and .zip file generation.

After PDF generation is complete, you can receive the binary content back directly from the API, or you can automatically store the bytes in either your Amazon S3 bucket, Google Cloud Storage, or Azure Blob Storage, and receive a URL to the file back instead.

Solution Package & Support

API2PDF will provide the docker image. Docker containers can run in any environment such as AWS, Azure, Google, or on premises. The base image is built on .NET 8 w/ alpine linux.

An installation and quick start guide will be provided.

Support is included for 30 days upon delivery of the solution package. Support includes assisting the developers with installation of the Docker container and verifying that they are successfully producing the PDFs. Any bugs that are from the API, and not a result of the underlying engine can be addressed and fixes provided. Support also includes upgrades for End of Life or Deprecated Versions.

Restrictions

  1. The customer agrees, as part of the sale, not to launch a competing PDF generation service.

  2. The customer agrees, as part of the sale, not to distribute the Docker image outside of their organization.
